John,
There will always be cases where talent is
unrecognized until later or maybe even not at all.
Tastes and styles change. From a personal
perspective, I have a limited amount of time (don't we
all) and I need to use it as wisely as possible.
I will have some criteria to select things to pay
attention to. Will all do, some are concious some are
not.
Knowing someone's proficiency and experience helps
make that selection. Might not be perfect, but what
is?
