Steve,
I LOVE this idea.
I am creating a committee to form a plan and implement it. I hope you will
server on the committee and work with us to make this idea happen. I have
asked a long-time TPINer who was close to Leon to serve as chair. I¹m sure
he will agree. :-)
Are you thinking that we record the music ourselves or that we compile the
recordings of the great players you mention below into a tribute CD? Both
have their individual issues of course.
Thanks for your great idea.

So how do you put all that into a tribute to one of the unsung legends of
trumpet playing?
How about a CD?
Many of you heard Leon play live. I'm told he could imitate many of the
greats - Harry James, Louis Armstrong, Ray Anthony... These were guys who
sang through the horn. So what I propose is we post suggestions of the best
examples of what Leon called "singing" through the horn from the vast
history of the greatest music every - Leon's music - and compile a CD. I'm
sure we could fund the project through TPIN. Heck, it could be funded
through pre-sales orders of TPIN members. It could be sold through ITG or
other web sites like Mike Vax's bigbandjazz.net. After costs, all of the
proceeds could go into that ITG scholarship fund.
This way we would have Leon's name on the music he loved and the style he
preached and it would last forever, not to mention a funded scholarship.
And of course the title would HAVE to be "Keep On Honkin'!" and last tune on
the CD would HAVE to be Nature Boy!
Respectively submitted,
...Steve
