[TPIN] - Warning "Lip twisting is mythology!"

Hi Byron,

When I read your original post, I took it as an interesting anecdote. You
got to meet Jesus Alemany, and he told you what worked for him. I didn't
think anything you wrote was an endorsement for this or that. And good for
you and your band, getting to open for some great Latin bands, too. Very
cool.

I also noticed that you wrote that Jesus said it was something that "they"
did, implying that other trumpeters he knows use the same technique. Maybe
it's a method favored by Cuban players. Can't argue with results - the guy
can play.

Best,
Joel

This thread got pretty hot, pretty quick. Sounds like everyone has now
gotten all sides of the issue. Let me just say that in my case, the twisting
thing is pretty harmless unless you do it to extreme. It actually feels
kinda good to me, when my chops are in good shape. It doesn't feel too good
when I've slipped out of shape. I think the theory is that if you have
strong chops, the little twist gets the blood moving when you can't put the
mpc to the lips. That's all. Jesus did not say it was a "secret way to get
good chops", by the way. And, again, I'm very sorry if anyone in TPIN land
construed this reporting of mine (the conversation with Jesus) as a new
pedogogy that must be followed. Do what works for you, and disregard the
rest...as they say in Al-Anon Nothing substitutes for practice or playing
the horn!

Regards
Byron
