I'm a simple person, but after hearing about valve alignments for years, my take on them is that you 
use tiny mirrors on sticks to look inside the tuning slides to see how the valves are lining up vertically 
with the slides, then use corks and felts to make sure that they line up perfectly. In extreme cases, the 
valve stem may need to resoldered to make it line up horizontally.

You might also possibly find a deposit of solder that needs to be filed down with those cool, tiny files.

How did I do?

If this is the case, would the mirrors and files and corks and felts be a lot cheaper than $300?

And finally, would the average simple trumpet player like me be able to do it with the right tools?
