Well, I think Boozo may not be keeping up with inflation in his calculations,
but the idea is valid. There is enough competition that horns $3000 and below
  are great.

  But.............
Having said that, I just got done practicing [yes, I know it's late at night ....
I went to my deserted office building and played for the security guard]
on a very nice Blackburn E-flat/D that cost me $1800 used. New ones
of his current design are in the $4000 range, and if I was making a living
playing the E-flat trumpet I'd probably have one. Better sound than the
Schilke E3-L, in my opinion. Quite playable. This one is a horn that
Cliff Blackburn made for himself from a Conn valve section. He converted
it to a tuning bell and made his own bell and leadpipe. I'm the third owner.
The previous owner played with Cliff in the Louisville Orchestra, but is now
  no longer playing the trumpet.

So, I wouldn't limit myself to $3000, but Monette has certainly priced himself
  out of my finances.

I would have to agree. It is worth that much money if you THINK it's
worth that much money, but IMHO, a good pro horn shouldn't break the
$3k limit (notwithstanding rarity, scarcity, age etc) The materials
and workmanship only add up to so much value. Anything after that is
marketing.
