In the end, if it ain't happening in your chops, it ain't gonna come
out the end of your horn. I've witnessed Clark Terry sound like Clark
Terry on his own horn, then pick up a beat up piece of poop Bundy with
no name mouthpiece, and he still sounded like CT. Not because of CT
licks, but CT sound.
The horn only helps. Your sound is in your head.

We sure agree on this one, Boozo. And yes, Clark can play any horn and
mouthpiece and sound just like himself. He did it with my equipment once while
we were on tour in Europe with his Big Bad Band. (Just to be funny and show
us that he could.) I have to say that playing on his band was like getting a
trumpet lesson every night of the week. He is still one of the most amazing
trumpet/flugelhorn players that I have ever heard. As being one of the
nicest and most caring people I have ever known.
And - your last sentence says it all. You play what you hear in your head.
Yes - we must practice, work hard, strive to become better players, and yes
- even choose what equipment might work best for us, but it still comes down
to what we are able to do when the "chips are down" and we are in front of
that audience.
