But yes, to address your question, I have gone through the first pass of the
drills every other day, and then the second time every day, and am wrapping
up the third trip through the drills every other day, and will complete the
exercises towards the end of January by repeating them again, this last time
everyday. I do not know anyone who has used the book, but I will say that
tone quality has improved, and may be better than when I set the horn down
10 years ago. Range has definitely improved, but I agree, I am not playing
music; not doing anything musical or that I would want anyone to hear.
Any recommendations?
Best Regards

OK Greg:
Recommendations galore........
My gut feeling? Get rid of the book (Double High C in 37 weeks) and go to a
more "traditional" approach, which would include more technique work and
more work on musical approaches. There is a good reason why you don't know
anyone else who has used that book.
If you had come to me, I would have you in the Arban's, Clarke Technical
Studies, Clarke Daily Set Up Drills, Colin Lip Flexibilities, some things out
of etude books, some tunes out of fake books, some solo literature (at a
level that suited where you are now), etc.......
There would also be long tones, working on learning different types of
scales by heart, and a little theory for good measure. You would pretty much play
every day. You would practice in intervals, not all at once, and you would
rest quite a bit while practicing.
Range development at this point, would only be a small part of your
practicing and would be done gradually. For me, the most important things for you to
work on would be:
Sound
Flexibility
Endurance
Ability to play at all volume levels
Technique
Use of air
and lastly - range...........
And - know what? You WOULD have some things that you would want some other
people to hear!
So there you have it. My suggestions for your "come back" schedule.
