  Frank,

Years ago I changed the way I hold the trumpet and it has help
quite a bit in relieving pain in my left hand. I think it has helped
  me play more relaxed.

I used to wrap my left pinky under the third valve slide: too much
weight on that small finger -- pain. Now I wrap the pinky and
ring finger under the third slide and it has helped in third slide
dexterity also. I use the left middle finger to operate the third valve
slide. The horn feels balanced in my hand and tension has been
  relieved.

I'm thinking about more here than just emphasizing good posture in
lessons. I'm already familiar with the Alexander Technique and its
proponents, but I'd be interested to hear a little bit about anyone's
experiences (either as students or as teachers) with those who have
made body use an important priority in their playing or with their
students.
