John,
I cannot tell you how grateful I am that you sent this thread on to Clete
Baker. When I lived in Nebraska I worked with Clete many times and he
advised me on a previous recording project. He is a real pro and has some of
the best ears I¹ve ever known. So, I think his advise is pure gold and I
value it greatly.
Clete, I like your idea of just using the two ribbon mics and figuring out a
good balance between trumpet and organ. This certainly would greatly
simplify the process for me which is good as I will be playing AND pushing
buttons.
A little more detail about this church and organ setup. This church has a
typical English ³choir² setup behind the main altar and the organ pipes are
actually placed above the choir on both sides facing each other across the
choir. So, the pipes do not face out into the sanctuary. So, when I record
the trumpet and organ with just two mics out in front, the organ isn¹t as
present as the trumpet is.
So, one solution may be to move the ribbons closer and as high as possible
to get more organ and less trumpet. I just don¹t want the trumpet to sound
like it is coming from the next room. The console is movable, and I can put
the trumpet way back from the mics, but there are some limitations to where
the trumpet can go because of built in pews for the choir. This is why I
thought a ribbon close the the trumpet for presence and a set of large
diaphragm condensers for the organ. I¹m not married to the omni setting
though.. It was just an idea.
Do you think going with two ribbons would be the way to go first? If so, how
would you mount them? Separated or close? I also have the ability to set
them in a ³Blumlein² configuration.
Again, thank you for this valuable information!
Michael
