We had a recent thread about books on arranging.. I can't seem to find it.Can anyone point me to the suggestions that came out of it?<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
I originated that thread, and then circumstances intervened, and I never did say thank you for the great information received! It is amazing what you find on this list!!
Herewith, a summary:
Rob Alley:
Bill Dobbins book "Jazz Arranging and Composing : A Linear Approach" is an excellent choice for Ellington style writing, especially in the smaller group configuarations. Both the Wright and Sebesky books recommended by Michael Stewart are great books. But they will get you closer to Nestico, Basie, and Thad than to Ellington.
Dean Betts:
Berklee School in Boston must have some good texts on voicing and arranging.
Denny Schreffler:
If you want to hear/see some familiar Mancini charts, there used to book (with a vinyl record) called "Sounds and Scores."
Clyde Hunt:
There is a book by arranger Don Sebesky that advises how to voice "in the style of" several of the bigbands
Michealt Stewart:
Ray Wright: Inside the ScoreDon Sebesky: The Contemporary Arranger
