[TPIN] Bach stuff

Certainly is common sense, but it isn't the conductor, it's your section,
and especially the principal who you have to blend with.
So as a conductor, I'm happy to have players in the orchestra I conduct - an
unpaid community group. Commonly, the first player uses a Bach C (Ha! A 238R
with 25H pipe) and second on a Bb which is an unlacquered thing called a
Temby. Add a Jupiter 1600 model and a Yamaha student horn for the last 4
trumpet work, and they do a good job, sounding like a trumpet section. But
then again, they don't have any primadonna egos...
As a player, I'd like the second and others) to blend with me, and have a
sound I can work into as well. Some players have trouble doing that on a Bb
to match my C, so they get asked to play a C. (They still have trouble, or
resistance to being a team player, and somehow, playing with a fluffy out of
tune sound with no projection isn't what I want to be doing in a section. It
sort of sucks and the conductor may ask what horns we are playing) Others,
often those who don't own a C, can blend easily with me: I'm happy, in fact
happier to have a section players with me so we can work together.
In repertoire where my choice is piccolo, like Messiahs, Bach oratorios
(oratoria?) I insist that none of those tubby Bbs arrive, nor preferably Cs.
Get or borrow a D or picc.
Last observation as I get of my soapbox, is to ask, if Bachs sound so good,
why go to all the trouble of modifying them to play properly? After all, it
is the sound we go for, right? ;-)
cheers
Andy

Good common sense points, Patrick. The ability to hear, match and "color"
the sound appropriately is everything. It aint't the horn, as much as it is
the player.
