Trevor,
I've played numerous Bach C trumpets with 229 and 239 bells.
The differences are subtle, and in many cases I think the differences
in the leadpipe of each copy of a horn can mask the differences in the
bell number (229 versus 239). All else being equal, I think you'll find
that the 229 has a bit more "sizzle" to the sound and a more piercing
sound when you "light it up." I've heard the 239 bell described as the
"chamber bell." But, both bells are used by orchestral players, and
I find them close in their playing characteristics and sound.
Other players will probably disagree with this.
The 229 bell on a large bore body with 25H or 25A leadpipe seems to be
the standard Bach orchestral C trumpet in the U.S., but Bach is less dominant
in the orchestral world now that the latest Yamaha C's have been well received.

I have a Bach C trumpet that is a 239 CL and I would be interested to know
how it differs to a 229 CL ? Thanks you to anyone who can enlighten me!
Cheers,
