[TPIN] Duke Ellington and C trumpet/polka gigs

I did the Polka circuit in Nebraska for 3-4 years while in school and it was a real education. I heard some virtuoso button accordianists that blew me away. Amazing musicians. This also really helped my reading. The manuscript is often very different and signs like the coda and segno mean completely different things than they do in conventional music.
The Catholic Polka Mass was quite an experience as well. The parts of the traditional mass set to polka tunes. What a trip that was.

What style of polka? Bohemian, Polish, or North American?

I had a buddy in grad school who was a good player but not
orchestrally trained. He argued with our teacher that of
all the transpositions, down a step on the C trumpet
seemed very unnecessary. This guy was a bit of an airhead
anyway, but he shows up to a polka gig that very next
weekend with his C in his gig bag rather than his Bb.
Being a religious guy, he very quickly realized that God
does have a sense of humor.
