Cheri Cole (tptgirl), and I have been on opposite sides of a couple of the
recent "discussions" on TPIN, but here is one we may be able to agree on. My
position is that "buzzing is for bees." I realize that this places me at
odds with a large contingent of music educators in particular, and likely a fair
number of working professionals and proficient amatures as well, but my
mentor/teacher convinced me a long time ago that because buzzing the mouthpiece
alone does not produce the same "feel" as when it is in the horn, little of
any use is accomplished by so doing. He taught me a set of exercises based on
Walter Smith's lip flexibility studies, scale studies and interval exercises
from Arban, that I use (takes a bit under 2 hours to complete), if I am away
from my practice room and materials, or which I alternate with solos or band
scores I am practicing, that have, as he predicted they would, shortened my
needed warm-up time prior to a rehearsal or performance, to not more than 4
or 5 minutes.
