[TPIN] pedal C

In my younger years, I couldn't seem to master the pedal tones on
trumpet (flugelhorn is easier), and quickly gave up on trying. In
the last few years, though, I have found them to be really helpful
for my overall flexibility. Initially the pedals would come out a
9th below, i.e. open pedal would be a Bb, etc. With some work, I
have been able to nail the octaves for all 7 fingerings, slurring
down and up through 3 octaves, and even get some sub-pedals. My
flexibility is much easier, so I have become a firm believer in the
value of pedal note practice for every horn. When I ask why this is
so, I get numerous answers, and they all seem to be correct. Relaxes
the lip, focuses the energy and sound better, allows for greater lip
movement without losing control, and more. Fascinating phenomenon to
me, and I would love to hear more from other players why this works
so well. It wasn't something that my early teachers (several
acclaimed players) ever emphasized or even encouraged. David Adams
