A LITTLE IS A DANGEROUS THING.

Howard,
I have a humble suggestion for your dilemma.

Forget about all of the "shot in the dark" possibilities. You'll end
up chasing your tail.

Get a Dr. Charles Colin "Advanced Studies and Flexibilities"
excercise book. Practice each exercise at a PP level and concentrate
on fullness of sound and center of pitch. Listen to yourself and
feel the column of air flowing thru the horn. In a short time you'll
be slipping around those altissimo notes with ease and your
projection will improve immensely.(concentrate on the lip slur
exercises. Shakes and bends will become second nature).

At this point, you'll realise all you have to do is increase air into
horn and volumn goes up. More correctly, solid sounding double "C's"
at any level above MF will cut like a knife and with practice you"ll
notice that middle range will improve ten fold.

You'll also find find that your lower lip should feel more pressure
than the upper so as to allow the upper to vibrate more easily. I
believe the upper lip produces all of the sound while the lower is
merely an anchor for the whole embouchure. This definitely provides
endurance that the lip complainers don't understand.

I don't feel that forcing yourself to feel your lower lip vibrate is
a good thing. It just may be the reason that you said "I sound like
crap."

Concentrate on the lip slurs primarily and slide right up to the top
of the horn a little at a time. Tongueing and banging out hi G's
will shortly follow.

Regards,

Bob Zack

I'm a downstream player with good sound but limited range. I've
recently been looking at all the info out there and have been
experimenting a bit, trying to find something that will allow me to
play higher. In my normal set up, I either have a very slight
overbite, or my teeth are level. I recently tried playing with an
underbite, where I push out my chin and extend my lower teeth in
front of my top teeth. Four noticible results. 1) I'm playing
upstream. 2) I can feel the buzz on my lower lip (for the first
time). 3) I sound like crap and can't do anything with it. 4) I can
play almost an octave higher than I ever have before, and with no
pressure. What's going on here? Is this something I should pursue? It
seems a bit radical. As is, I sound great in the staff and below the
staff, but have nothing above the staff. A two octave range was good
enough for a bunch of folks. But then, I'm a trumpet player, so I
have this hi note macho thing hanging in the back of my closet.
