Mike,

My book "Goz and Other Greats" will be available at the end of summer 2007.
I wanted to write it as early as 1968, but I realized, after communicating
with Gozzo's mother, that there were a lot of bad feelings about his
decline and death. I waited several years before taking up the project
again in 1991, with a trip to the Kenton reunion. Over the years since, I
have interviewed Billy May, Les Brown, Dave Pell, Maynard Ferguson, Ray
Conniff, Jimmy Rowles, etc., etc., and my book will be more than just a
chronology or a perfunctory look at his life and training. I "live" Gozzo
every day and have a visceral reaction to his work that I derive from no
other. Many folks have expressed the notion of writing a book about Gozzo,
but for reason that I discovered, such cannot convey the reasons why he
played the way he did and what he brought to the art without handling the
story very kindly.
