A 3X is standard bore, ML .460.
A 3X+_ is Large at .464
A CG is a 6X with the thinner bell and .464 "choke"
A 6X is large bore through and through. .468, and plays great lead if you
have the air to push it.
My first Benge was purchase in 1970 in Des Moines, Iowa. It was a 3X+. I had
just come off of transfering from my high school band where I played a
Getzen Eterna Severinsen, .464 bore. The 3X+ was what the salesman in DM
said I should have. It was a great little horn. Every one else in the school
was playing Bach Strads. My teacher was a renegade, on a Shilke, in my
opinion. The best jazz trumpeter was playing a Benge CG. But it got stolen
out of our lockers outside our band room one day. Why my horn? So with
insurance money, I got a new CG. Played that horn for another 20 years out
of high school, then found a newer '80's CG that played better. Turns out
the old horn had red rot. Sold it to a TPIN listmate when I first joined
this list. He replaced the leadpipe. Wonder if he still has the horn?
My next Benge was a pocket trumpet I picked up a couple of years ago on
EBay. Original lacquer. Plays just like a 3X. Made in LA. I'll never sell
it. Has original lacquer in 85% condition
Now, I am looking for that old Severinsen Getzen to buy and the CG, or 3X+
to complete my collection of either a copy of every horn I've ever owned, or
the original.
Love the Benge. My next horn purchase will either be a Chicago or Burbank
Benge 6X, or a Getzen Severinsen.
That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it!
Byron
Bright sound, great valves, and, it proccesses the air. Maybe not
"efficiently?" , but some of us use air to compensate for other human
frailties.
