[TPIN] Benge Trumpets: Brightness Factor

I'm sure the mouthpiece plays a significant factor, as does
any part of the horn that is tapered (leadpipe, bell).
I doubt that weight will make much of a difference in the steady-state
sound at medium volumes. It's when you play louder and louder
that you notice that the lighter horns brighten up more quickly.
At medium volumes, a lightweight horn is just a joy to play:
quick response. But, it can be more challenging to achieve
the desired projection and tonal balance when you "step
on the gas." That's what I've found in 26 years of playing a
Bach 43* Lightweight, which is still heavier than a Schilke B1
or a Benge.

I think "brightness factor' is also very mouthpiece dependent.
A 1C/24throat Bach on a 229 CL is considered "dark" but take that
mouthpiece an put in a rotary trumpet and it is too bright and edgy.
Take a 7E/117 and the 229 will sound "brighter"
Of course lighter trumpets will be even more bright. But you can colour the
sound with approach and mouthpiece to exaggerate or emphasize what you will.

Subject: [TPIN] Benge Trumpets: Brightness Factor
When I bought my first Benge, back in '70, I was told that the horns tended
to be "bright" in sound, and to get a lacquer horn rather than a silver
finish. I wonder if any one has one that they have in raw brass, and how
that affects the Brigthness Factor.Or a lacquer verus silver discussion?
