Really got a kick when one of them drove by the other day and they had
Kenton's Send in the Clowns playing. Can't wait to see him again and tell
him I was one of John Harner's students for a few years.

Ah, Jon, isn't that legacy just an amazing thing? See, we are connected in
a direct line of trumpet players.
John Harner was my student. And I was a student of Don Jacoby, Carmine
Caruso (who John also studied with), Roy Stevens, Conte Candoli, Ren Schilke, and
others. And - even though none of us will be the "next Maynard," aren't we
all keeping his tradition and love of jazz and trumpet education alive?
I applaud EVERY one of us, who teaches privately, or teaches in a middle
school, high school, college or university. I applaud every one of us who has
done a clinic in a school anywhere. I applaud every one of us who have played
in a concert where young people have been in the audience, and I applaud
every one of us who have put ourselves "on the line" and put out a recording of
our playing.
THAT is the legacy that I believe Maynard would have wanted from all of us.
