I've never actually run into anyone that uses a CG Personal, or similar
depth/size, for extended lead work.

There is big difference between having to play above the staff (on average,
between say between F & high F or G (and perhaps higher) and very loud, all
night, night after night vs. venturing above high C in a while. In
particular, the *kind* of sound you need and the volume required - all these
things conspire to push lead players to shallower and narrower cups.

Although some notorious lead players do play pretty "wide" cups - for
example, I think John Audino used a very but wide piece - close to a 1 1/4
VB size, but very shallow (what would be considered an F cup in VB terms).
And I believe Lew Soloff plays an old New York VB 3E or 3F, which is closer
in size to a current day 2 (in terms of width). Even he moves to shallower
and louder equipment (Shilke 14A4A) when playing "electric" gigs (or so
rumor has it).

I think it's fair to say that probably on average, most lead-player/1st
trumpet types use at least a 3E or smaller - and often fairly cushioned
rims - for the demands that made on them.
