Jeanne,
I was in no way attacking you. We are all entitled to our own thoughts, perceptions and opinions. I for one believe that your book, and your plans to add additional resources on DVD and the internet will be successful. I just have to take exception to your idea of the family tree concept, and your comment that:
"Those who wind up reading and working through *Trumpeting By Nature* will, indeed, be *taught* concepts, approaches and principles which I learned at the side of my teachers.
But they will also learn things which I have developed through dozens of years of teaching and decades of performing."
Personally, My perception when reading that comment is one of arrogance, and somewhat degrading. Someone that reads and works through your book will be INFLUENCED by your approaches and principles, and will most likely take those concepts and "DEVELOP" them into something that will work for them. You even say this yourself when you continue with; "But they will also learn things which I have DEVELOPED through dozens of years of teaching and decades of performing." So you even admit that you were influenced by some of the concepts, approaches, principles, and that you also DEVELOPED them into concepts through dozens of years of teaching and decades of performing. Because I don't agree with your comment that I will be "taught" by YOUR book, or that I will become a student if YOURS, (not that being a student of yours is a bad thing ),doesn't mean that I am incapable of learning. Learning is a process that involves taking information that is given to us, experiences, and influences and processing it into something that gives a result - either a good result or a bad one. I know that I will be influenced positively and/or negatively by reading your book, but I will not be "taught". I guess you could use the analogy of taking a shower vs. a bath. Your statement of telling us that we will be "taught" when we read your book, is like the "old school" of thought school teacher saying - I will give you this information and you will digest it. In other words, "the shower" concept. I would think that you would prefer "the bath" concept. Something along the lines of: "My hopes are that the concepts and principles found in my book will influence you to find new ways in your quest to become a better player." Mind you, this is just my opinion, and I am in no way trying to flame you. I wish you all the best on your book.
Sincerely,
Wayne Trager
