Glenn,
Great post!
Although we can't completely ignore (the subject of way too many of my posts
lately) the woeful "demand" side of the equation, we should be very
conscious of communicating value and use it to raise circumstances for ALL musicians.
Of course, it doesn't always work that way (I've been underbid a lot in
recent years).
It's the only real problem I see in my neck of the woods, but I'm also aware
that (sub?)-cultures take time to evolve (or de-evolve) and none of them
will turn on a dime "perception wise". Hence the need to maximize "perceived
value". I really abhor advertising, but it's a necessary evil......
If I didn't want to have a day gig and grew my hair for a living between
gigs (LOL!) like I did when I was youngI could have more work, and make more
money, but I'm also pretty sure that my hourly rate would fall. (Without
factoring in the day gig income....)
Doesn't take a lot of supply to adversely affect this benighted equation.....
Best Regards to all,
-Rick
