Great post!
 
Although we can't completely ignore (the subject of way too many of my  posts 
lately) the woeful "demand" side of the equation, we should  be very 
conscious of communicating value and use it to  raise circumstances for ALL musicians. 
 Of course, it doesn't always  work that way (I've been underbid a lot in 
recent years).  
 
It's the only real problem I see in my neck of the woods, but I'm also  aware 
that (sub?)-cultures take time to evolve (or de-evolve) and none of them  
will turn on a dime "perception wise".  Hence the need to maximize  "perceived 
value".  I really abhor advertising, but it's a necessary  evil......
 
If I didn't want to have a day gig and grew my hair for a living between  
gigs (LOL!) like I did when I was youngI could have more work, and make  more 
money, but I'm also pretty sure that my hourly rate would  fall.  (Without 
factoring in the day gig income....)
 
Doesn't take a lot of supply to adversely affect this benighted  equation.....
