My wife and I spent a great 2 hours listening to Byron
and the Huntsville Symphony last night. The show was
titled "Satchmo and the Sounds of New Orleans".
Bill Grimes was guest conductor - apparently he and
Byron were college roomates and the chemistry and
mutual respect between the 2 was quite evident.
We got more than we bargained for - not only is Byron
Stripling a gifted and powerful trumpet player but a
good singer, story teller and comedian as well.
Tiger Rag, Ain't Misbehavin', Do You Know What it
Means... and Sweet Georgia Brown were some of the
highlites of the first set.
Stars and Stripes opened the 2nd set - but it was
unlike ANY S&S you've ever heard. Jazz, swing, salsa,
you name it happened during the arrangement by
Grimes.
Minnie the Moocher and Flat Foot Floogie showcased
Byron's scat skills along with his trumpet playing and
the finale was a Louie Armstrong Tribute that was
absolutley wonderful.
1st encore was a haunting very legit "America".
Byron played a 3000 seat packed concert hall in front
of a full orchestra - and hardly ever approached the
microphone unless he was singing. We were sitting on
the main floor 20 rows back center stage and his sound
was powerful there.
Thu Huntsville Symphony was spot on especially the
Brass sections. Tight trumpet and trombone playing by
all the usual suspects.
Great concert and well worth the money. Don't miss
Byron Stripling if he comes your way.
And - Byron - if you're reading - your Montgomery
jokes were priceless!
