[TPIN] The Pinky Ring

Mike Vax's comments are interesting and parallel my own when it comes to
the pinky ring or hook on the little finger, right hand.
I think that actually what the ring/hook does for me is act as an
unconscious guide. I have some horns with and some horns (specifically
my 1908 Conn cornet) without the ring and in sitting here thinking how I
play, I use it actually to help make sure (unconsciously but probably
truly) that my hand doesn't move out of place.
Playing the unhooked ones like my cornet doesn't fracture me or
anything, but I feel more comfortable with than without.
Interesting, because I'd never fully thought this out, except to make
sure I wasn't using the ring/hook as an octave key.
