Although I know that you get what you pay for, I rather have good results
with my Jupiter flugel. But I made a discovery that might cause Jupiter
owners something to be careful about when taking out valves to oil them. The
bottom springs are not secure at all, and if you tilt the horn in a certain
way, the spring will fall out. I didn't notice this until I put the valve
back in, only to discover the valve wouldn't pop back up. For a moment I was
puzzled and took the valve out to see that there was no spring because it
did fall out. After a one hour search, I finally located the spring which
rolled under my desk. Needless to say, I was relieved to find it. Otherwise
I'd have been up the creek without a spring. Bearing this in mind, I'm going
to make sure that I have a spare set of springs in case I'm not as lucky to
find the missing one the next time I'm not careful. Perhaps Jupiter will be
more extensive in their manufacturing of flugels and use top springs rather
than the bottom ones. I'd rather pay a bit more for safety sake, like I did
when I bought my Benge flugel years ago. But again, for bargain basement
prices, you get what you pay for - substandard crud based on equally
substandard manufacturing methods.
