Hi all,

I have a student with a chronic lip splitting problem. It appears to be
unrelated to any trumpet playing he does, since it preceded his starting
to play trumpet. He has been to doctors, who have given him advice to
"lay off for awhile," and a dermatologist who gave him a cortisone
injection and pronounced him cured (he wasn't).

Is it possible that he has to add moisture to his living environment with
the use of a humidifier? Also, is he a wet lip player or does he play dry
lipped? Speaking only for myself, I've had fewer problems with splits by
playing 'wet' rather than 'dry' where the wetness provided a cushion between
the lips and the mouthpiece. What is his water intake? Does he drink enough
water?
