Glenn,

Seems to make good sense that some of the trumpet's sound needs to project laterally to the other players. At one time, the Parker Cashel Crystal Bell was produced. It was a trumpet with a glass bell section. It was supported by a rubber-cushioned forward brace which allowed the bell to "vibrate." This was considered a "beneficial" attribute! See: http://www.cornetconnection.com/pcb.htm for more info.
