Tim and Cheri, I play a Bb Bach Mod37 Strad and a Bach 239LR C. I've read
Karl's recommendations too. I use a Schilke 15 for both my horns. I'm
curious how the throat size and back bore of the 15 translates to the Bach
sizes Tim writes about below. The 15 feels more open than the Bach 3C to
me. Anyone have a cross reference betw Schilke and Bach mpc's. More
specifically, anyone know the backbore/throat size of the 15 compared to
Karl's Bach mpc recommendations?
Thanks,
Wayne Bates

Cheri,
I used to use a plain old Bach 3C mouthpiece on both B-flat and C trumpet.
[My B-flat trumpet is a Bach ML43LT and my C trumpet is a Bach L229 with
25A leadpipe.]
I still use that mouthpiece on B-flat trumpet, but at the advice of Karl
Sievers from the
forum on bachbrass.com I got a new Bach 3C with 24 throat and #24 backbore
for use
on my C trumpet. He claimed it would open up the feel of the instrument a
bit and improve
the intonation, and it did. The difference is not huge, but it is there.
It took a few days to
adjust to the 24 throat, but it was not big deal. I might try a 25 throat
(stock throats on
non-Megatones are 27) if doing it again.
I ordered the mouthpiece from Dillon Music and they sent it promptly.
They can do the
modifications in their shop. You definitely don't want to make a special
from Bach,
as they are legendary for being slow in delivery of special orders.
Dillon does this
frequently and for a reasonable price. I think the piece was around $60,
which is about
double what you'd pay for a stock piece from Mouthpiece Express, but it's
still reasonable.
Custom and high-end makers like Gary Radtke and Dave Monette make
C-specific pieces
also.
If you play a stock Bach piece now on your C trumpet, I'd advise ordering
the same piece
from Dillon's with a 24 or 25 throat and with the #24 backbore. If you
don't like it you could
probably sell it on TPIN without too much loss.

Tim
