[TPIN] Starting a beginner on a Cornet vs Trumpet

I'll echo Rod's thoughts. The two instruments
are different enough in sound and response that
I'd start a student on the instrument that he
wants to play. For most kids in the U.S. trumpet
is what they are most familiar with and what
they wanted to play when they chose an instrument
to study. Sure they can learn cornet and transfer
over at a later time if they wish, but the size
of the instrument seems secondary compared with the
sound and blow of the horn.
It makes sense to me to get them the instrument
they want so that they won't be trying to make the
other instrument (cornet) play and sound like the
one they want (trumpet). And, it will be easier
for them to blend with the great majority of the
other players in band, who will be playing trumpet.
