I agree.  I have a shepherd's crook Besson with a Sparx mouthpiece and 
it sounds very different from a trumpet.

On the other hand, most students who come to me with cornets have an 
American style long horn with a Bach 7C cornet mouthpiece.  There is 
very little difference between the sound of this set-up and a trumpet.

I get very few cornet players at the HS, but I would love to have a real 
cornet sound on the cornet parts.  We are going to a contingency budget 
next year so I don't even get the usual little bit of money for a few 
new horns.
