[TPIN] Starting a beginner on a Cornet vs Trumpet

In the day, ca 1960(s), where I came from, we all played cornet.  That is what was required.  I remember the high school band director telling our first chair, who brought in a brand new Schilke B1, to take it home, that he could not use it in the band,  becasuse it had "a completely different sound."

Now, most US school bands use trumpets, and kids wouldn't be caught with a cornet.  It has a completely different sound. :-)  Most school services music companies can't give away cornets.

So, what kids start on is often determined by the requirements of the school program.

The first chair kid didn't give up the trumpet, and is a top call professional player in his market.
