[TPIN] Starting a beginner on a Cornet vs Trumpet

I'm a great advocate of starting young students on cornet, if at all
possible.

Simply stated: A cornet is easier to hold and easier to blow.

Given that the instrument is easier to hold, and to 'blow' it also helps
avoid embouchure problems that arise in young students who might otherwise
allow the horn to drop to one side, due to weight.

Plus, the very nature of the instrument encourages correct playing and
development of good habits at an early age. I started my son at age 7,
first buzzing the lips for a week, then the mouthpiece for a week, then the
cornet, first on a Bach 7B. After a month, he moved to a Bach 1C (which he
claims he "loves" - the mouthpiece affinity starts early <g>).

It's a pity that the cornet has fallen out of fashion in schools for
beginners.

Cheers,

- Dave
