I agree with Mike Vax and Jim Donaldson, a short list of preferred brands would be

  1. Olds Ambassador, or Recording
  2. Getzen 300 or 700 (These are very underrated horns, an exceptional buy)
  3. Benge (Any Burbank or LA Benge)
  4. King Super 20 or Liberty (I like the older ones from the early 50's)
  5. Conn 22B, 12B, 2B, etc
  6. Selmer Grand Prix (these are real French Selmer horns)

As long as you stick to name brands you should do alright. There are also other name brands that I am not as familiar with such as Blessing, Beuscher, etc.

There are also other places besides Ebay to buy a horn, such as trumpetherald.com, Dillonmusic.com, and the local pawn shops. Remember, too, that you can check Ralph Jones' site or a few others for a serial number list for most major manufacturers to estimate the age of a horn.
