Brad,
I think it is a great idea to make your majors play Taps. I would make them play it on a jury too. It is every bit as important as scales or solos, more so perhaps. I'd make them do a wedding march and the Hallelujah chorus too
These are pieces every trumpet player has to play in their lives. It is a benefit to them as students and every person that has to hear them do it in the future.
There is nothing worse than a lame taps, a lame processional or a lame Hallelujah chorus.

If I don't want to play them for free, I don't play. There are 1800 WWII vetrans dying each day and I have a soft spot in my heart for them. My schedule doesn't allow me to play very often, but I believe it is very important to offer something for free once in a while.... besides, it makes me feel really good to do it! I am even considering making it a requirement for each of my univeristy trumpet majors to play taps once before they graduate from my studio. Maybe a masterclass for my students on how it is traditionally performed, including the famous JFK taps recording off the web, echo taps, and peformance suggestions including "stage presents", what to wear, where to stand, when to play, etc... would be a great way to start this off.> > Similar ideas?> > > Brad> > -----Original Message-----> From: tpin-bounces at tpin.okcu.edu on behalf of John Kool> Sent: Tue 6/12/2007 10:30 AM> To: TPIN at tpin.okcu.edu> Cc: > Subject: [TPIN] Taps for Pay> > I have volunteered to play taps at times, and I believe veterans deserve > a live bugler, even if they can't afford it.> > But I know the florist and funeral director and organist at the church > all get paid.> And I have been paid a few times in the past, also.> > When is it appropriate to charge/not charge for playing taps at a funeral?> > Also, is there a "going rate" to play taps?> > I don't currently have a day job and am thinking of contacting funeral > directors.> _______________________________________________> TPIN mailing list> TPIN at tpin.okcu.edu> http://tpin.okcu.edu/mailman/listinfo/tpin> > > > > _______________________________________________> TPIN mailing list> TPIN at tpin.okcu.edu> http://tpin.okcu.edu/mailman/listinfo/tpin
