Long story short... I found that just by
doing a fair amount of certain breathing exercises on my way to rehearsal in
the morning that my body got out of that "I can't play because it's so
early" feeling very quickly.
-----------------

It's actually much easier. The short version: as soon as you get out of bed, drink LOTS of water and not too much caffeine.

The problem you have in the morning is caused by the byproducts of you're body's natural processing while you've been sleeping. This byproduct stores itself in the muscles and tissues. Somebody with more scientific knowledge can fill in the names and details. Anyway, this "stuff" is normally flushed, literally and figuratively, from the body during the day as you hydrate. The trick is to speed up that process, hence the above short version.

I use to say exactly the same thing as you. I believed that I needed that first bad morning session in order to be able to play better the next time. It's not true. Now, when I have a morning gig, I only drink ONE cup of coffee (gotta have it!) and then about 24 to 32 or even 48 oz. of water. By the time the liquid comes out clear (that's as polite as I can make it) you'll be in good shape. It works! Try it. Just make sure to plan your stops if the gig is a long drive. :)

...Steve
