My big band uses the EMBEE poly stands and has since 1999 (same stands). I
bought the medium height stand for the saxes because it made reading a
little easier on some of the more experienced eyes in the group. Three
drawbacks 1.) It's too easy for the saxes to play into the stand - I have to
remind them to play out between them and 2.) Standlights are a little more
difficult to mount - there is a little punch-out to mount the light but my
guys have taken to mounting it on the cover of the book. 3.) If playing
outdoors, you have to put the book on each stand as you set it up so the
weight of the book holds the stand in place, otherwise even a medium gust of
wind will blow them over.
Now the good points. They look good, hold up well, are light, they fold
flat, are easy to transport, setup, & breakdown. We played an outdoor gig on
Saturday and got hit with a fast moving thunderstorm. We saved the books and
let the stands sit in the rain! After the storm, a roll of paper towels left
the stands clean and dry and none the worse for wear. We have never
encountered any problems on indoor gigs. I highly recommend these stands.
