John and listmaties,
Great brass section on the Fanfare (sensational trombones.) I have some observations. Please comment or comment on my comments.
1. I've never heard it played that slowly
2. That slow tempo took away the fanfare quality for me. didn't sound fanfarish
3. Slow tempo took away the excitement and thrill for me(I know the sound on a
computer is lame)
4.They really kept the volume down until the ff section. I was wanting a little more
from the f section. It sounded like the forte was not very much louder than the
mf and the fortissimo was VERY much louder than the forte.
5. The trumpets sounded overly careful(not a criticism, playing outa tune or fracking
has a nasty effect) How many of you have played it and approach it like that. How many of you have played for a conductor that wanted it more aggressive(but a little more treacherous for the trumpets)and gutsy.
6. Percussion seemed a little reserved too. I like to see them go a little more ape.
I've got to perform this tune(listen to me calling it a tune. as if the next tune is Take the A Trane) with an orchestra at a Festival this summer. I'd like to get your thoughts about how you've played it and how you would play it.(I could use a good 3rd trumpet if you got nothing to do and want to drive the fourteen thousand miles to the concert. Actually summa you guys live close enough to consider it.). Any advice would be great too. I've done it twice before. great players once, ok players once. These will be very good players this time.
