The only "system" I know of is the Yamaha Silent Brass System.

I just purchased the trumpet mute and "performance studio" (ST5) about a
month ago, and I love the whole setup. The mute alone is a good step
forward from older "whisper" mutes, but adding the "performance studio"
module opens up a range of options for late night practicing. You use the
studio module with the mute and a pair of headphones to give you the effect
of playing in an open room (among other interesting effects). You can also
patch in external music sources (e.g., Aebersold CDs).

The practice mute, of course, isn't an "open" blow - but for wood-shedding
scales and such, or improvisational practice, it's perfect. You might want
to advise your student to look into a good, but lightweight, pair of
headphones or ear buds to use with the unit, since practicing for an
extended period can start to wair on your ears, if the headphones aren't
lightweight.

I highly recommend this setup. I've heard that the more basic module isn't
nearly as capable as the ST5 - but I've never tried it. Everyone I've
spoken with indicates that spending the extra money for the ST5 is worth it.
