I agree with your sentiments that one should be prepared for the gig with
ALL of the tools at hand... That being said, a real pro actually asks when
s/he is being booked what mutes are going to be required... more often than
not when I ask, the contractor isn't aware of any "special requirements"...
that's when I know to pack everything!
On a side note, I recently picked up a Derby but had no luck in ordering the
stand to hold it... my father in law stumbled across a retired player who
was happy to give me his whole mute collection inlcuding the stand and a
mute holder that can accomodate 6 mutes... cool retro stuff!
