Hi, Travis,
Many years ago (mid-60's), I was fortunate enough to live in the home
where Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, and many other jazz stars of the day lived
while they performed at Lennie's, which was the premier Boston-area
jazz spot of the time.
I remember one day having a long conversation with Zoot about
drinking at gigs. He told me that when he played while 'under the
influence,' his perception was that he was absolutely great. Then,
one of his concerned friends recorded him while he was playing drunk
and played the tape back to him. That's what made Zoot stop drinking.
He told me that his playing improved significantly after that
experience and it was due, largely, to hearing himself recorded as
his ability was being diminished by the effects of alcohol. Needless
to say, the same concept applies to mood/perception altering drugs, too.
So, if possible, try recording the offending musicians and play the
results back to them. You'll get positive results if they are serious
about careers in music.
Best regards, as always.
