About 4 months ago there was a thread discussion about Large Bore horns, and
someone, (I think it was Mike Vax perhaps or another major Pro), mentioned
that they just could not play a large bore horn.
I'm wondering this goes for me also?

Sincerely,
James P.

Hi James,
There are a number of factors that contribute to the intonation qualities of
any particular horn, including things like the amount stress placed on the
leadpipe, and valve alignment, to name a few. If you're playing almost a
half step sharp, though, I think your focus should be on just listening and
adjusting your tuning slide and your chops to play in tune. I'm a big fan
of alternate fingerings, too (as long as you can get the right tone and
timber), but a half step off is significant enough to suggest that there's
more going on. If that's true, I wouldn't look to solve the problem by
changing equipment. It's puzzling, though, that you mentioned not having
the problem with your old horn. Don't know what to say about that...
