Dear Travis,
I agree with Dr. Alan that if the alcohol problem is serious that it is
a good idea for a psychiatric evaluation and consultation for relief
through prescription medication. I also agree with the situation with
your father-in-law, (and I am sorry to hear about it!), that even with
medication, there are underlying emotional issues that are far larger
than even what medication can provide.

Very well stated. I'm glad that music colleges put more emphasis on
performance anxiety. Back when I was a kid taking lessons and starting to
play gigs, stage fright was a major issue with me where I'd become totally
petrified (and I still get that way). At the time, stage fright was somewhat
'taboo' to admit to and discuss with some teachers. It was considered to be
an affront to the 'macho' many of us tend to have as young kids and budding
trumpet players. Their answer was "Have a couple of pops and you'll be
alright." Talk about a recipe for disaster! Thanks one and all who helped to
make this issue something to be known as being common, to bring us that
suffer this malady out of the closet. Better to swallow your pride and
discuss it rather than to swallow half a bottle hooch and not be able to put
together two words or two notes in a logical manner. You're helping to save
many lives that otherwise could go down in flames.
