I appreciate all of the comments on the Debussy/Bix connection. I got
some privates, but there were also some that came to TPIN. Drawing
impact lines back is so neat, because each of us never knows when 10
years after we've played something, we'll hear, "When Paul Kurtz played
on the Miss St. John's going up the river, I did ..." I did, I bought,
and I thought messages can come out of our playing and teaching! The
word is spread by peoples' love of what they've heard! I mean, I
listened to Nick Drozdoff's recent MP3 stuff and said, "Yep, that's cool
and inspires me!" I listened to a piece that Doc Severinsen played with
the University of North Florida Jazz ensemble the other night (a slow
and different, yet inspiring piece) (Name's slipped my middle-aged
brain!) and I still keep fragments of that in my brain. Real neat piece
and I think recently done! You get the piece in your head, as Bix
probably did with Debussy, and you can't get it out! Whether you play it
or just hear it, it becomes a part of you!
