As a comeback player, may I offer my sincere congratulations to all my
brother / sister comeback players? For whatever reasons we hung up our chops
in the first place, the fact that we returned is a giant step. Talent, no
matter what degree, is a terrible thing to waste and keep hidden under a
bushel basket. At least to me, I feel that once a player picks up the horn,
don't isolate yourself and end up being a shut in player. Do the community
band thing, or if not ready for that, put yourself in the mainstream in
other ways. Obviously, if you're reading this, you already have done so by
being part of the TPIN family. Maybe beyond reading and hopefully responding
to the various postings, you take it a step beyond where you start making
more personal exchanges via email. It's amazing that when that's done, it
might even go beyond that where emails turn into phone calls. Just by being
part of TPIN, many friendships with other trumpet players has evolved by
this process. These friendships are worth their weight in gold when I pick
up my horn to play as well as how I live in every day life when off trumpet.
My biggest hope is that any and all trumpet players (and other
instrumentalists) consider themselves to be welcome additions to my life. If
and when in my neck of the woods in Massachusetts, ALL are welcome to ring
my door bell. You will be welcomed with open arms. That's all part of
getting back into the swing of things where we must 'keep, keep, keep on
keepin' on.' Friends are strangers that we've not yet met. Let us build on
that to make strangers our friends. It works.
