If students are excluded, I think it defeats the purpose, but if every student who desires to is allowed to participate along side a few adult parents, I don't see a problem. I have since rotated out of the group, but in my childrens' case, the playing parents were the same ones who were the band and orchestra sponsors. It was just one more mentor situation, as you say.

I would like to put my "two cents" into this discussion. I completely agree
with Ron. When a production is put on by a school, it should be something
that involves STUDENTS. Hiring an all adult pit band completely goes against
the EDUCATIONAL aspects of even putting on a musical. It is NOT just for the
drama department. It is for the whole school. Even if the performance isn't
what it would have been with all adults, it is still a valuable experience
for the students who would be playing in the pit next to the adult musicians
(or pro's for that matter.) My gut feeling would be that if you are an adult
player who doesn't feel comfortable in that situation, then just don't "take
the gig." We all have to be mentors at some point in our careers as
musicians. This seems like a perfect time and place to do it.
