I have no idea about the physics of sound in relation to hearing, but why  
wouldn't plastic ear cups with holes in it be a possible answer? You could  
adapt the size of holes or number of holes to meet your need?? If it was made  
from clear plastic it would not be noticeable and still would allow sound to  
travel to your brain for the needed "computing" and yet cut out some of the  
unnecessary and possibly damaging sounds?? I have not tried it and maybe it  is a 
stupid idea, but if it works to block or redirect drum set "noise" it  might 
be a better way to partially block the loud, harsh sounds, without  blocking 
all of it! More sophisticated models could have angled or even  layered sound 
mufflers like those used in halls to control sound!! Laugh  all you want, I am 
just throwing out an idea. Maybe some struggling  musician  will develop it and 
get a patent and not have to struggle  anymore, because the rest of us 
struggling musicians will be supporting  him/her!!
