The 6310Z flugel valves have always been on the sluggish side. I had
my valves lapped, and use thin oil, and it solved the problem. They
don't ever stick, but they don't feel lightning fast, either. They
do, however, go up and down as fast as I can push them. Despite the
valves, the 6310Z remains one of the best flugelhorns around. Rumors
are there is a new Yamaha flugel in the works. No timeline or
information yet, though.
You won't find the same problem with Yamaha trumpets. Their valves
are uniformly excellent. The 6310Z flugel valves are an anomaly.
