I used anhydrous lanolin since the 70's, also.
You get it from a drug store.
I never found it to get stiff with water or spit from inside the horn.
It cuts well well with valve oil, or even petroleum jelly.
If you want it pre-cut with petroleum jelly, you might try "udder balm",
which works nicely also. It may be sold more places than drug stores
and was originally to soften cow teats and keep them from drying and
cracking.
But I don't think it "plays well" with Binak lubricants, so I have been
using Nanette's slide grease for a while now.
