Nick,
I am not surprized anymore at how little our countrymen know about the significance of jazz as an American artform. They don't know history, they don't know the arts. Most of the education administrators I've ever met couldn't pass the history class I teach to teenagers. They are clueless. And unless it affects how they look to the community, they couldn't care less. They want to look good, period. They'll change their mind of their current stance makes them look bad in the community.
If the University gets a little bit of bad press in the Sunday edition of the Chicago papers, somebody might change their tune. Perhaps this is an opportunity for a little public discourse about the music which otherwise would not happen. Let's hope something good can come out of it all.
